Wanguku hits back at Nyeri residents over criticism after taking Ruto’s job offer
By David Nthua, August 6, 2025The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation Chairperson Thuo Mathenge, politically known as Wanguku, has taken a swipe at a section of Nyeri residents and leaders.
They have been criticising his decision to accept a job offer from President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking to Kameme TV on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Wanguku dismissed claims that his acceptance of the appointment was politically motivated or aimed at personal gain.
He said his decision was guided by the nature of the role and his professional interests.
Not about wealth or positions
“If I were given the position of Defence and others, I would have flatly rejected. But I was offered the position of addressing agriculture-related issues. I accepted the offer because I have known what happens in KALRO, in colleges, so basically I am in school.
“And Nyeri people should stop this discussion of oh, seats, positions. I am not there to get wealth. Which wealth? I have my own money. For me, I am there to learn,” Wanguku said.

He argued that public service should not always be viewed through the lens of political rivalry or personal enrichment, adding that some criticisms were based on misplaced assumptions.
Calls for change
Wanguku urged Nyeri residents to abandon what he described as a culture of opposing people simply because they take up roles in government.
“Stop this behaviour of opposing people for accepting job offers in the government. I can never be outside; I will be inside,” he added.
According to him, his role at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation gives him an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the country’s agricultural sector, which he hopes will benefit the wider community in the long run.
The KALRO boss maintained that his decision to work within the government was not a betrayal of any political allegiance but rather a personal choice to contribute where his skills and knowledge could have the most impact.
Wanguku concluded by reaffirming his commitment to serving in his capacity while calling on his critics to focus on development issues rather than personality-driven politics.
