Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has suspended the Githunguri Sub-County liquor licencing official who was arrested over allegations of soliciting a Ksh40,000 bribe to license a bar whose operation had been terminated following complaints from the public.
Wamatangi instructed the county Department of Public Administration to relieve Mercy Wambui of her duties until the matter by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) is determined.
“I will not tolerate any form of corruption. Officers demanding bribes in order to give services to our people or to give licenses to bars that members of the public have requested be closed over nuisance will not have space in my administration,” Wamatangi said.
“This also applies to any official who will demand money from contractors and suppliers in order to award tenders.”
Wamatangi’s warning
The governor said he has made himself clear regarding his onslaught against corruption and issues relating to alcoholism and drug abuse in the county.
“Both wars must and will be won at all costs. Any liquor licencing official who will collude in order to give approval to bars that don’t qualify must be prepared to face the consequences. This includes dismissal and prosecution,” Wamatangi stated.
The inspection and licensing of bars in Kiambu County was conducted in April and May and those that met the requirements were cleared to operate.
Dissatisfied bar owners were advised to make their cases through appeals whose hearing began today.
Licencing of bars and restaurants is a function of the county governments.
