Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has banned heavy trucks from accessing major roads during rush hours.

Speaking on Friday, August 4, 2022, Nassir said the affected roads include Nyali Bridge, Fidel Odinga, Links Road, New Malindi and Old Malindi Road and Ferry area.

He said the move will ease traffic congestion in the city, especially during rush hours between 6 am to 9 am and between 3.30 pm to 8.00 pm.

“One of the things that is going to be able to assist us in terms of reducing traffic is that we have gazetted timings for heavy trucks,” he said.

According to the governor, heavy trucks have been classified to be those exceeding 10 tonnes.

The move comes even as the County Government seeks to decongest the city, which has been recording traffic snarl-ups, especially during peak hours.

Mombasa Governor’s pledge

Nassir said he is committed to providing a conducive environment by promoting good order.

“The economic prosperity of Mombasa shall be driven by the efforts of the private sector. The role I shall play as Governor is to provide a conducive environment by promoting good order, business-friendly county by-laws, and innovative policies that spur growth. This is my solemn commitment to the people of Mombasa,” he said.
