The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been ranked as the topmost university in Kenya by uniRank, an international higher education directory and search engine.
The ranking places Kenyatta University, Strathmore University, United States International University Africa (USIU-Africa) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in the second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
According to a statement by the directory, the ranking is a non-academic League Table of the top Kenyan Universities based on valid, unbiased and non-influenceable web metrics provided by independent web intelligence sources rather than data submitted by the Universities themselves.
Other universities ranked among the top 10 universities in Kenya include Egerton University (sixth), Mount Kenya University (MKU) (seventh), Moi University (eighth), the Technical University of Kenya (ninth) and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (tenth).
Private universities which have been ranked among the best include Strathmore, USIU-Africa and MKU, which topped the list of the best three private universities in Kenya.
MKU, which has experienced rapid growth in recent years, made it to the top universities this year among other institutions.
uniRank says it ranked 63 Kenyan higher-education institutions which have been chartered, licensed or accredited by the appropriate Kenyan higher education-related organization.
The institutions must also have been offering at least three-year bachelor’s degrees or postgraduate master’s or doctoral degrees and delivering courses predominantly in a traditional, non-distance education format.
