Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko and former nominated senator Millicent Omanga have come out to warn Nairobians amid a report about an outbreak of super gonorrhea in the city.

The Star newspaper on January 12, 2022, quoting a report by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) was the first to announce the outbreak of the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) in the capital.

According to the KEMRI report, the drug-resistant gonorrhea was isolated from a sample taken from one of the 24 sex workers in Nairobi last year.

Amina Abdullahi a researcher from KEMRI who made the discovery said most of the sick women did not even have the clinical symptoms of gonorrhea.

The researchers from KEMRI stated that those with the disease rarely exhibit any clinical signs or symptoms. They added that the disease resists the drugs that are normally used to combat it.

“The results showed complete resistance to all the antimicrobials,” Amina Abdullahi was quoted by The Star as saying.

The findings suggest that the super gonorrhea is majorly transmitted by sex workers. The researchers argue that the call girls focus more on protecting themselves against HIV, forgetting other STIs that would equally affect them.
