Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has gazetted a special sitting for the Senate on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, to approve the establishment of the National Dialogue Committee.

The special sitting, according to the notice, will also discuss the appointment of Andrew Mukite Musangi as Chairperson of the Board of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

“Notice is given to all Senators that pursuant to Standing Order 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader and with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Tuesday, the 29th August 2023, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate,” the notice read in part.

The National Dialogue Committee, if approved, will comprise 12 members, six from the government side and six from the opposition.

Role of the National Dialogue Committee

The committee will be mandated to hold talks for 60 days, after which it will submit a report to the Senate for debate.

The report is set to propose an amicable solution to the conflict between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party, which has led to demonstrations across the country.

The two sides have already submitted names for the committee led by Kalonzo Musyoka (Azimio) and Kimani Ichung’wah (Kenya Kwanza).

Among the issues on the table for deliberation include the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the audit of the 2022 Presidential election and the cost of living.

The committee will be aided by a technical team comprised of experts from both sides.
