Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Sunday, September 11, visited the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital amid negligence claims following the death of a new mother.

Sakaja, who assumed office recently, made an impromptu visit to the hospital as pressure mounts on the county government to take action against responsible medics.

In a video seen by K24 Digital, Sakaja is seen inspecting the hospital wards in the company of a team from City Hall.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is on the spot over the death of a 28-year-old woman who delivered twins at the facility on Tuesday, September 6. It’s alleged that Maureen Anyango passed on after excessive bleeding.

According to the deceased’s husband, Robert Omondi, the wife started bleeding profusely after delivering the bouncing babies through caesarian section.

When he realised that the wife was soaked in blood, Omondi reported to the nurses on duty but they were quick to dismiss him that they were attending to other patients, endangering the life of the mother.

It took the intervention of other patients at the facility to get the nurses to attend to the woman. It later emerged that the mother was suffering from severe bleeding after childbirth, medically known as post-partum haemorrhage (PPH).

Maureen was later transferred to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She, unfortunately, died on Wednesday at around 8:30 am.

“It’s my prayer that women who are giving forth life are valued in these hospitals, there is a massive disconnect between patients and people who are responsible for their lives. I wish someone would have attended to my wife on time, my wife would be breastfeeding her sons. Why are we putting money first?” Omondi told a local daily.

City residents urge Sakaja to act

Netizens joined Omondi to call out Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for negligence on social media further calling on the Nairobi County Government to act and save lives.

“Goodmorning ⁦ Johnson Sakaja, move with speed to get to the bottom of this matter and assure residents of Nairobi that your administration will put an end to these sorts of things at all our facilities. Very very heartbreaking,” Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said.
