UDA flagbearer Deputy President William Ruto says he will have to be convinced beyond any reasonable doubt for him to accept election results should he lose to his main competitor Raila Odinga in the August 9 polls.

Speaking during the presidential debate on Tuesday night July 26, 2022, Ruto stressed that accepting election results includes going to court if he has doubts.

“Accepting the outcome of the election includes going to court if you have an issue with the results – that’s accepting the outcome of the election, ok? You say my competitor has won, I have a doubt and I will go to court,” Ruto said.

Ruto reveals why he said he will accept defeat

The Deputy President explained that he deliberately announced that he will accept defeat because of the way past results of presidential elections have been used to foment crises.

“Why I made that deliberate statement is because we have had a situation in Kenya where every other election we foment a crisis around refusing to accept the outcome of an election. And it has cost us lives, property and many other things. And I need to be on record and which I am that I will accept the outcome of this election. I know that the people of Kenya will make a choice,” Ruto said.

Should he win the August 9 poll, Ruto said he will govern the country from day one while if he loses he will go to court in case he has issues and will accept the court’s verdict on the case.

“If it is me I will prepare to govern the country on day one. If it is not me I will accept that my competitor has won, if I have any issue I will go to court and accept the outcome of the court,” the DP noted.
