Police in Voi have arrested a 45-year-old suspect transporting 327 kilograms of bhang in a Toyota Prado, estimated to be worth Ksh9.8 million.

The driver, Patrick Odoyo Jabuya, is reported to have been driving the car affixed with fake number plates before he was intercepted by sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Police Service (KPS).

“Police in Voi are processing for arraignment a suspected drug trafficker who was yesterday intercepted with 327kg of bhang stashed in his Toyota Prado, while en route to Mombasa from Nairobi,” DCI stated.

The detectives, who were acting on a tip-off, mounted a roadblock at the Ikanga area in Voi, where they arrested the driver with the bhang packed in 11 gunny bags.

Two other sets of number plates were recovered from the car.

“Acting on a tip-off, the joint team of DCI and KPS officers erected a roadblock at Ikanga area of Voi, flagging down the 45-year-old driver while on frantic efforts to turn about and escape,” DCI added.

“Upon search, 11 gunny bags containing bhang and 963 big rolls of the same unholy herb were found, alongside two extra sets of number plates (KCU 888F & KCV 489R). Patrick Odoyo Jabuya (the suspect) was immediately arrested and the cargo estimated at a street value of Sh9.8 million seized and escorted to Voi Police Station.”

Legal procedures have been instigated, including the detaining of the vehicle fitted with registration number KCP 263K, which is believed to be a proceed of the trade.

Early this week, detectives seized 41 bales of bhang valued at Ksh6.2 million in Komarock.

DCI said the drugs were seized following an operation carried out by a joint team from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Organized Crime Unit (OSU), which took place in the Komarock Phase 2 estate on Sunday night.

DCI said the bhang was discovered in house number 228, belonging to Alah Mohamed Kala, who has been taken into custody as a suspect in the drug trafficking case.

The seized bhang, weighing 205 kilograms, was hidden in gunny bags.
