Siaya: Police launch manhunt for 80-year-old man who allegedly killed his 70-year-old neighbour

A family in Bondo, Siaya County is mourning the death of their 70-year-old kin who was allegedly killed by his 80-year-old neighbour after a land dispute.

Confirming the incident, Bondo Sub-county police commander Ibrahim Kosi said the deceased’s body was discovered along a pathway near his home. At the time, his body had no visible injuries.

Police say despite the marks showing the deceased was hurt they were able to establish that the two, John Okelo(the deceased) and Jared Ochieng had fought prior to the tragedy.

Kosi warned residents against taking the law into their hands and urged them to seek other means of solving land disputes.

The body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary pending postmortem.

Elsewhere in Kisii, sorrow engulfed Bomeroka village in Kitutu Chache, Kisii county, after a man killed his mother following a disagreement over food portions.

In the heartwrenching incident, the man aged 34 is said to have attacked his 74-year-old mother after being unsatisfied with the food portions served.

It is reported that the accused wanted to have all the food to himself inconsiderate of the fact that other family members had not eaten.

As soon as he was asked by the deceased not to serve all the food, the man grabbed a panga and attacked his mother on the head and disjointed her arms.

Neighbours flocked to the scene to save the old woman but she succumbed to her injuries as they prepared to rush her to a nearby health facility.

“He wanted to take all the food when his mother asked him to think of his brothers who had not yet eaten. He felt disappointed by his mother and attacked her with a machete,” the family’s housekeeper stated.

Witnesses and family members reported that they suspect that the accused who is currently on the run killed his mother over their unresolved land disputes.

Similar incidents

The latest came amidst rising cases of homicide incidents due to family feuds in the past few months.

In a similar incident, police in Mtwapa, Kilifi county arrested a 21-year-old man suspected to have murdered his mother, Judith Nafula Konya, in Trans Nzoia county.

The suspect, Brian Wafula, was arrested at a hotel room in Kanamai area while highly intoxicated with a substance that police believed was marijuana.

Mtwapa Sub-county police commander, Mohamed Wako, confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and booked at Mtwapa Police Station awaiting to be taken back to Trans Nzoia.

Wako said they had booked the suspect at Shanzu Law Courts under miscellaneous application seeking orders to hold him at the Mtwapa Police Station awaiting the arrival of detectives from Trans Nzoia.

“We are collaborating with our counterparts drawn from Trans Nzoia county and as soon as they arrive, we will hand over the suspect to them for further processing and arraignment in court within the jurisdiction where the alleged crime was committed,” he said.

The suspect’s mother, who was a laboratory technician at St Joseph’s Girls’ High School, went missing on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

The body of the 50-year-old technician was later found in Kiminini river on Saturday, October 22. The suspect is said to have threatened his mother, prior to her murder.

Kiminini Sub-County Police Commander, John Onditi, while confirming the incident said that the deceased had a quarrel with her son who had sold her farm produce without ‘permission’.
