Police in Limuru, Kiambu county have impounded illegal donkey meat being readied for transportation to butcheries.

Two suspects have also been arrested and their vehicles impounded.

According to police sources, law enforcement officers acted on information from members of the public that some unscrupulous people were slaughtering donkeys at Rwasumari, Ndeiya location, Limuru.

They mounted an operation during which they bumped into a scene which was littered with fresh animal meat.

Thereafter, they discovered a heap of donkey heads and upon counting them, they established that they were cut from 30 donkeys.

“30 carcasses of the donkeys were strewn at the scene with their flesh having been removed from the bones,” a police source who sought anonymity said.

The source said that the meat was being put into gunny bags ready for transportation to Nairobi.

There were many other skeletons at the scene which is an indication that the same was an unlicensed ‘slaughterhouse’.

Two suspects, a man and a woman whose names were withheld, were arrested while their vehicles, a maroon Toyota Probox registration number KCX 783H and a similar make white in colour KDJ 434J impounded.

The suspects were placed in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow.

Confirming the incident, Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said that the suspects will help police with investigations with a view to establishing where the uninspected meat is sold.

‘We shall leave no stone unturned and my security team will ensure that the illegal activity is put to an end completely, ” he said.
