Police in Mombasa county are investigating an incident where an officer attached to the Central Police Station was attacked by suspected criminals under the watchful eyes of his colleagues who later freed the criminals.

According to a police report, Constable Samuel Mutinda was waylaid by the six suspected criminals on his way to work before the attack happened.

“While proceeding to work at around 0430 hours, he was attacked by six unknown men along post office road Likoni, whereby he fought with them and in the process managed to arrest two with the assistance of members of the public,” the police report reads in part.

The report further reveals that he managed to handcuff two suspects with the help of his cousin – a boda boda rider named Samwel Wambua.

“At the same time, he also informed the Central Police Station Officer Commanding Station (OCS) what had transpired. The OCS informed the National Police Service (NPS) control room Mombasa to alert the duty officer Likoni police station for assistance,” the report added.

The report further reveals that Mutinda went to the nearby Likoni police station where he introduced himself by producing his job identification card.

However, in the process, one of the officers at Likoni police station removed handcuffs from the two suspects he had arrested and used the same to handcuff him alongside his cousin.

“At this point, the officer (Mutinda) was seriously assaulted by the freed suspects, alongside one of the officers who was on duty and had been requested to rescue his colleague,” the report further reads.

The duo were later locked into the cells.

“The officer and his cousin while still handcuffed left the station for Likoni sub-county hospital for treatment and were later referred to Ganjoni Hospital for further treatment, where he is currently receiving treatment, pertaining to serious abdominal injuries,” the police report reads.
