Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has reacted to a video doing rounds on social media which shows a woman giving birth on the floor of Mama Lucy Kibaki hospital.
The video captured the pregnant woman giving birth on the hospital floor aided by a handful of other women – health workers were nowhere to be seen.
It was reported that the woman gave birth on the floor at the hospital in Umoja after she was denied entry to the maternity ward by a security guard who had locked the gate forcing people to intervene and break the gate.
It was also said that the baby didn’t make it.
Reacting to the video, Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris called on Governor Johnson Sakaja to enhance existing systems to prevent the technical hitch that blocks pregnant mothers from accessing service.
She further insisted that maternal health is a fundamental right and should not be compromised.
“What happened at Mama Lucy is disheartening. I trust @SakajaJohnson will enhance existing systems to prevent the technical hitch that blocked a pregnant, Kenyan woman from accessing healthcare services at her most vulnerable moment. Maternal health is a fundamental right and should not be compromised. #LindaMama,” Passaris tweeted.
