Trans Nzoia parents have called on the ministry of education to ensure that all the schools that were used as polling stations and tallying centres during the general election are fumigated even as learners report back to the institutions today.

Speaking exclusively to K24 Digital, Trans Nzoia Parents Association chairperson Wellington Waliaula said the majority of schools in the country had been crowded and that it would be risky allowing students back before fumigating them.

“We understand COVID-19 is still there and we should not expose our children to the danger of contracting the highly infectious disease. The ministry of education should act fast and fumigate all the classrooms in our schools,” Waliaula appealed.

He also urged school heads not to send students with fee arrears back home.

“Majority of parents might not have enough money now. I would like to urge principals and head teachers to be considerate and accommodate students until they are able to clear fee balances,” he said.

Caroline Wekesa, a parent in Matisi area, asked school heads to make some adjustments and deduct school fees that were not utilized during the two weeks when the students were at home.

“It will be fair enough if principals reduce the amount of money we are required to pay as school fees because, for the last two weeks, our children were at home. We should not pay the full amount for term two,” Wekesa said.

She also called on teachers to utilize time left to cover the remaining syllabus to avoid overload when the normal academic calendar resumes next year.

“We understand from next year, the normal academic calendar will resume. We ask teachers to ensure that they finish the remaining syllabus before then,” she added.
