When Davine Chepchumba from Nandi county scored 382 marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination, she was elated and hoped to further her studies.

Chepchumba, who hails from Kibungu village in Chepkumia ward in Emgwen, hoped to join a boarding school to further her studies with the ultimate hope of eradicating poverty in her family.

But just a few days before the lapse to the date of form one reporting to the various secondary schools they were selected to join, Chepchumba remains hopeless not sure whether she will join Moi Kapsowar Girls High School where she has secured a slot.

Having come from a financially deprived family, the girl has been working as a tea picker at the Kibung’u centre to raise money for her school fees.

“I have decided to be a tea picker to at least raise even some amount to cater for fees and shopping. I am really going through challenges. My thirst for education is still there but in this state, my hope continues to diminish,” Chepchumba told K24 Digital.

Her family which lives in rental rooms has been struggling to afford daily bread and in most cases they are forced to sleep hungry.

Her parents Emmanuel Kipchumba Rutto and Ruth Chemutai work as casual labourers.

Having difficulties in raising fees to educate Chepchumba whom she described as a visionary and saviour of their family owing to her brilliance, the parents appealed to well-wishers who would be touched by their family’s predicament to help their daughter in any way so that she could continue with her studies.

“It is our humble appeal to well-wishers to help our daughter join form one and study like the rest of the children. We are very optimistic that Chepchumba will not only turn around our family’s situation but could also be helpful in society, once educated,” the parents stated.

Chepchumba who scored 382 from Busara School promised to work extra hard should she be given the opportunity to deliver her family out of poverty.

For assistance, well wisher can call the mother 0741847943 (Ruth Chemutai).
