Nearly every Kenyan supports Raila’s bid for AUC chair job

A survey conducted by market research company Infotrak has revealed that a vast majority of Kenyans support Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson job.

Infotrak on Thursday, April 11, 2024, released the report of the survey that was conducted between March 8 to 9, 2024 in all 47 counties with 1,000 Kenyans interviewed.

The survey showed that 81 per cent of Kenyans are in support of Raila’s bid for the AUC job.

Only 16 per cent of Kenyans were not in support of the Azimio boss’ bid for the post.

By region, Nairobi, Rift Valley and Nyanza gave the highest support at 88, 85 and 83 per cent respectively.

North Eastern region gave the lowest support (64 per cent) for Raila’s bid for the AUC chair job according to the survey.

By gender, the support base is high among females while in terms of age, the youth seem to have great support for Raila’s AUC bid.

The Infotrak survey shows that 84 per cent of females support Raila’s bid for the contest while 79 per cent of males are for the move.

According to Infotrak, those aged between 27 and 35 supported Raila’s bid for the AU job at 84 per cent against those aged between 18 and 26 who supported him at 75 per cent.

Raila’s AUC bid

Azimio leader Raila Odinga on February 15, 2024, officially announced his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson job.

Addressing the media, Raila stated that he had a myriad of consultations with his friends prior to the decision.

“Should the leadership of Africa want my services I am ready and offer myself to be of service to this continent. I’m ready yes to go for the chairmanship of the African Union,” Raila said while accompanied by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo.

The AUC chairperson seat will fall vacant next year as its current occupant Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad is set to finish his two terms in the position.

The new AUC Chairperson will be selected at the next AU summit in 2025.

AUC chairperson is elected by the Assembly consisting of the 55 member states for a four-year term, renewable once.
