A man who chopped off his wife’s three fingers after they differed over his secret lover has been arraigned in court after police in Mombasa County arrested him.

Boniface Nawate was arrested in the Mzungu Mchafu area in the Likoni sub-county following the assault incident.

According to police, the suspect’s wife Hellen Kangecha had questioned her husband’s relationship with another woman – an act that promoted the suspect to pick a knife, tie up his wife and chop off her three fingers before he dragged her into their bedroom and locked her up.

Following his arrest, the suspect was arraigned before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Gladys Ollimo where he pleaded guilty to charges of willfully and unlawfully assaulting his wife by stabbing and cutting off her three fingers using a kitchen knife.

The charges read that on November 8 this year willfully and unlawfully assaulted Hellen Kangecha by stabbing her and cutting her fingers using a kitchen knife thereby occasioning actual bodily harm.

In his mitigation, the suspect told the court that he was remorseful and pleaded for forgiveness saying he is the family’s breadwinner.

“I am seeking leniency, I am sorry for what transpired. However, may the court consider that I am the breadwinner and if sent to jail my family will suffer,” the suspect pleaded.

The court ordered the matter to be mentioned on November 21, 2023, for sentencing.
