Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has confirmed that May 2 will be a public holiday to mark Labour Day.

Public holiday falls on Sunday

In a press release on Wednesday, Matiang’i said since May 1 will fall on a Sunday, May 2 will be a national holiday.

“Whereas this day is already conferred by law, this press release serves to remind citizens to use the occasion to celebrate our workers’ contributions to the growth and prosperity of our motherland,” Matiang’i said.

Holiday on Friday

Matiang’i’s confirmation of Monday, May 2 as a public holiday comes at a time Kenyans are preparing for a long weekend after Friday, May 29 was declared as a day to mourn and remember the late former President Mwai Kibaki.

Kibaki’s requiem mass will be held on the same day at Nyayo Stadium.

The late ex-Head of State will then be laid to rest on April 30, 2022, at his Othaya home.

Idd-ul-Fitr

At the same time, May 3 has already been declared as a national holiday to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the CS for Interior in the exercise of the powers conferred b section 2 (1) of the Public holidays’ Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Iid-ul-Fitr,” a gazette notice signed by CS Matiang’i read in part.
