Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said the government will not use the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to “deal” with its political opponents.
Gachagua, who accompanied President William Ruto while filing his annual tax returns, promised that political scores will be settled politically.
“We want to assure you that President Ruto and those who work under him will never ask KRA to help us in dealing with our opponents. If there are people who are opposed to his leadership, they will be handled politically. We will never involve you(KRA) in our politics,” Gachagua stated.
According to the Deputy President, KRA has been used by former regimes to settle political scores against the opposition.
“I want to encourage officers of the Kenya Revenue Authority to be a professional organisation. There before, this organisation (KRA) was used in a negative manner to persecute people politically using taxation. That should never have happened and should never happen again,” he said.
Earlier this year, the second in command urged those who had tax disputes to negotiate a way out with the taxman, maintaining that payments of taxes is a must.
“If you have a problem with what we are asking you to pay we are open to discussions, come and we agree on how to pay little by little. You can pay a billion every month until you complete it. We have no problem, you don’t have to make noise. Even the bible is clear, give to God what belongs to him and to Caesar what belongs to Caesar,” Gachagua said in February.
