The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has denied reports that M-Pesa accounts were being linked to its systems during an M-Pesa outage that occurred on Tuesday.

In a statement, KRA termed the reports as “fake news”, urging Kenyans to ignore them.

“Kindly be advised that this is fake news,” KRA stated.

On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Safaricom’s mobile money service M-Pesa experienced several hours of outage, disorienting millions of Kenyans who depend on the service.

The outage affected M-Pesa-related transactions including buying of airtime causing inconvenience for many customers in Kenya.

“Apologies for the inconvenience. We are aware of the M-Pesa issue and working to resolve it soon,” Safaricom stated.

Hours later, the giant telco restored the service, without explaining the cause of the interruption.

“All M-Pesa services are now available. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank you for your patience as we worked to restore services,” Safaricom stated.

Previously, whenever there have been interruptions of services on the mobile money service, Safaricom has been informing its customers beforehand.

However, during the interruption on Tuesday, the telco did not issue any notice, leading to speculations.
