Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced disruptions in its flight schedules, resulting in widespread delays.
In an official announcement on Sunday, May 19, 2024, the national airline explained that the delays were mainly caused by the unexpected and prolonged grounding of two of its 787 Dreamliners. This was due to delays in receiving engines and crucial engine parts.
“We would like to inform our customers that we are experiencing some disruptions in our flight schedules, which are leading to abnormally high levels of delays. The main reason for these disruptions is the unscheduled and extended grounding of two of our 787 Dreamliners due to delayed engine and engine components delivery,” the statement read.
Additionally, the airline cited the unavailability of flight crew for some regional flights as a contributing factor to the disruptions.
Kenya Airways said they are implementing several measures to mitigate the disruptions including readjusting their network, proactively communicating with affected customers, accelerating the recovery of the grounded aircraft, and adjusting their schedules, which means downgrading some flights.
“To address these disruptions, we are taking the following quick actions: 1) Readjusting our network accordingly. 2) Communicating as proactively as possible to our affected customers. 3) Speeding up the recovery of the grounded aircraft 4) Adjusting our schedule, including downgrading some of our flights, to minimise the disruptions,” the statement further read.
KQ to resume flights
The airline expects to normalize its network by Tuesday, May 21, 2024, once the necessary engines and components have been received and installed.
“We anticipate that our network will normalise by Tuesday, 21 May 2024, once we receive and install the necessary engine and components. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” KQ stated.
Adding;
“We sincerely apologise to the customers who have been inconvenienced by these delays. We want to reiterate that your safety and well-being, as well as that of our crew, are our utmost priorities. We are doing everything in our power to resolve this situation as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
“We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.”
