81 primary schools in Kitui have benefited from relief food from Kiio Wambua Foundation, a charity organization in Kitui county.

Speaking after distributing food to primary schools in Kivou ward, Mwingi central, Fatuma Kasyoka, the organization’s CEO, said the organization is aimed at ensuring pupils do not sit for the oncoming exams on empty stomachs.

“Following drought that badly hit most parts of Kitui and negatively affected school-going children, we saw it wise to distribute food to the schools so that pupils cannot sit for the exams on empty stomachs,” she said.

Fatuma added that the organization’s patron, Enock Kiio, the Kitui Senator is calling on well-wishers to extend a helping hand to the needy in society and especially during this examinations period.

Sammy Munyithya, Kivou MCA said teachers had a rough time as most pupils showed up in schools having slept on empty stomachs.

“We are glad to the organization that has seen it good to boost education performance in our schools,” he said.

200 candidates

Dominic Njagi, Mwingi Primary school head teacher, said his school has over 200 pupils in grades 6 and 8 who are set to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

Njagi said the teacher had initially pleaded with parents to be contributing Ksh100 each in order to buy food for the learners but the exercise failed miserably due to harsh economic times occasioned by the drought.

He said most of the time teachers were forced to dig deep into their pockets to buy food for learners hardly hit by drought.

“The food received will help learners a lot during the exams,” he said.
