Residents of Kitengela are calling on the county government to unclog blocked water drainages in the town expressing fear that if the rains continue they will suffer and incur losses occasioned by floods.

The Sunday night downpour left traders counting losses after water flooded business premises.

Roads in the populous town remained impassable for the better part of the morning to the chagrin of stranded motorists.

Residents blame the Kajiado County Government for laxity in addressing garbage menace which has clogged the drainage system in the town.

“Just a few hours of rain, the town is already chaotic. The feeder roads are flooded. We fear that if the rains continue the situation will worsen. This has been happening every time it rains but no action is taken. We do not see the value of county officials just coming to assess the situation and leaving without any word or action,” John Irma a resident said.

Garbage and improper waste disposal have been a thorn in the flesh from time to time despite the county launching the Mazingira Unit.

Mazingira Unit, which was launched last year, was solely geared towards addressing the issue of garbage but locals say there has been no improvement whatsoever.

Kitengela town was also elevated into a municipality two years ago.

“What kind of municipality is Kitengela? We have never seen a single improvement in terms of infrastructure or hygiene. We had hopes that the town would receive a major facelift in terms of planning, infrastructure and hygiene. We are disappointed and fear if the rains continue we will suffer from waterborne diseases, “Alex Mbula lamented.
