Police officers in Marani sub-county in Kisii county have launched a probe into the death of an Assistant Chief of Rioma area who was found dead on Friday, May 3, 2022.

Marani Deputy County Commissioner Chege Maina said the body of the late Assistant Chief Evans Onchiri had no injuries.

“Investigators have begun their work and the autopsy report will reveal the cause of death,” Maina told residents.

The Marani Deputy County Commissioner, who was in the company of sub-county police commander Benjolive Muluve, appealed to Rioma residents to shun speculation and remain calm until postmortem results are released.

The autopsy was conducted by experts at Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital morgue where the body of the deceased lies.

“It is sad to lose our officer who is your chief. Do not speculate on the cause of his death,” Maina said.

Police caution Kisii residents

The police boss further implored residents not to rush to scenes of crime and tamper with evidence in case similar incidents ever happen in the area again.

“When a person dies, we have traces which help in the investigation. Stay 10 metres away from scenes of crime,” Muluve said.

Residents said children who were going to school for preps found the Assitant Chief’s body a few metres from his office and raised an alarm.

The sub-county police commander condoled with the family of the deceased, saying that the late Assistant Chief helped police in their investigations after four elderly women were killed in the area in 2021.
