Former Roots party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has resigned from the political outfit after a protracted row with its leadership following defeat in the August 9 general election.
In a letter seen by K24 Digital, Wamae resigned from the George Wajackoyah-led party on Wednesday, September 21.
Wamae said her role as running mate for Wajackoyah ended with the victory of William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua and requested for the removal of her name from the Roots party register.
“My role as Roots Party of Kenya Presidential Running mate lapsed with the declaration of H.E President William Ruto and H E Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on the 15th of August 2022 and subsequent upholding of the election by the Supreme court of Kenya on the 5th of September 2022,” Wamae said in a letter to the party’s secretary general.
“In this regard, I tender my resignation as a member of Roots Party of Kenya. Kindly accord the ORPP the requirements for my name’s prompt removal from your register.”
The businesswoman-turned-politician confirmed on Thursday that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties had effected the changes.
“A party is not entitled to funding if they do not have elected members. The hostility besides project was that mizizi will benefit from the fund. I have voluntarily resigned they can now eat hot air. Watch this space,” Wamae tweeted on Thursday.
Wamae fell out with Wajackoyah after congratulating Ruto following his election victory.
Her previous statement linking Wajackoyah with Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition flag bearer leader Raila Odinga also rubbed the party leader the wrong way.
Roots Party stripped her of powers to run its affairs and appointed Yagnik Vinod Ramji as the party’s deputy in an acting capacity.
The decision was made through a resolution by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) in a meeting held at the party offices in Karen, Nairobi.
“Following a resolution by the Roots Party NEC in a meeting held at the head office, we confirm the appointment of new party officials among them Yagnik Vinod Ramji as the deputy party leader,” Roots party said in a gazette notice.
Wamae has pleaded with Ruto severally to offer her a job in his administration. The President is yet to respond to any of her requests.
