The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has addressed the ongoing rumours asserting that there were non-existent polling stations during the 2022 General Election.
For a better part of Friday and Saturday, a section of Kenyans online were quick to finger the electoral commission over remarks that non-existent polling stations were gazetted and listed for use during the 2022 General Election, following an exposé on ghost schools.
The exposé by a local publication disclosed that the ghost schools including Kaptiony Girls High School, Kasaka Mixed Secondary School, Kampi Ya Nyasi Secondary School, and Kasaka Primary School, were listed in the Ministry of Education directory with operating bank accounts but no learners or teachers.
IEBC’s stance
In their statement, the electoral body watered down the rumours terming them misleading and inaccurate.
The body explained that the process of mapping locations of polling stations is stakeholders-driven in the presence of members of the public and political parties.
“Our attention is drawn to inaccurate and misleading content circulating in social media regarding ‘non-existent polling stations’ allegedly used in the 2022 General Election.
“The process of mapping where the polling stations will be during the elections is stakeholders-driven with political parties and members of the public included,” IEBC said.

The process of mapping where the polling stations will be during the elections is stakeholders-driven…
While denouncing the claims that had emphasized that Kaptiony Girls High School was a ghost polling centre, the electoral body shared a link to all gazetted polling stations for reference.
“The gazetted 46,229 polling stations used in the last general elections is public information and can accessed on the link https://iebc.or.ke/uploads/resources/6eYBKYk30d.pdf,” the commission added.
