Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary nominee Alice Wahome has refuted claims that she is a violent person after concerns about her temperament.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee of Appointments on Monday, October 17, Wahome told the vetting committee that she is able to manage her temper after concerns from Saboti MP Caleb Hamisi.
Hamisi cited an incident where the Kandara MP was accused of assaulting an electoral official during the 2017 polls.
Responding to the lawmaker, Wahome admitted that she was involved in an altercation in her constituency but denied slapping the official.
She downplayed the incident that was caught in a viral video involving a returning officer identified as Martin Malonza, insisting that she has never been charged in court with assault.
“I have been a politician for 20 years. Although I have served two terms and this third term, I have not been involved in any other fight or altercation except this that you seem to pick,” Wahome said.
“I am sure there are cases that can be very bad. I do not think I am a violent person. I am able to manage my tempers,” she added before National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei asked Hamisi to ask his question without being subjective.
Wahome had in October 2017 said she confronted the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official after he allegedly barred Jubilee party agents from signing Form 34B during the repeat presidential poll.
Alice Wahome’s net worth
Meanwhile, during her vetting on Monday, Wahome revealed that she is worth Ksh218 million.
She said she has accumulated the wealth from assets she shares with her husband.
“My net worth is Ksh218 million and this is value of properties between myself and my husband. They are family assets,” she said.
“Until September I have earned a salary from parliament and been in and off practising though very low because as a member of parliament you have very little time in your hands,” she added.
“I get a fuel allowance of about Ksh100,000 from my firm and also from these properties, which are in my name, I get about Ksh500,000 a month but at the moment they do not have tenants since Covid-19 and therefore I have no income coming from that end. I’m relying on the little Ksh100,000 and the MP salary.”
If approved Wahome will resign as Kandara MP to take up the CS role.
