The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday, August 9, unveiled a new portal to help Kenyans check and verify presidential results online.

In a move seen by analysts as an attempt by the electoral body to increase transparency in the transmission of the results, IEBC has allowed members of the public to access results declared across all the over 46,000 polling stations online in real-time.

Copies of the results in Form 34A from all polling stations in the country’s 47 counties can be accessed through https://forms.iebc.or.ke/.

Under the Kenyan election laws, Form 34A is the first form used to tabulate the results of the presidential poll. The form is filled by the Presiding Officer (PO) after the tallying of votes at the polling station level.

The PO is required to take a scanned image of the form using the KIEMS kit and transmit it (image) to the national tallying centre using the device.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati insists the results as declared at the polling station are final.

“Any complaints or discrepancies that may arise in the results Form 34A can only be resolved by the Supreme Court through a presidential election petition. Any complaints with respect to the results announced at the polling station must be resolved by the Presiding Officer,” Chebukati said last week while responding to Azimio-One Kenya and Kenya Kwanza formations’ concern about the results declaration form.

“There can be no discrepancy between the results recorded in Form 34A at the polling station and those transmitted electronically or even those received by the Returning Officer because it is essentially the same form captured by the Presiding Officer, witnessed by agents with a resultant five carbon copies,” he added.

Hotly contested presidential election

There were four contestants in the presidential poll conducted on Tuesday.

Raila Odinga of the Azimio One Kenya coalition and Kenya Kwanza’s William Ruto are the front runners in the cutthroat presidential contest.

Others are George Wajackoyah of Roots party and Agano’s David Mwaure.
