Police in Machakos are investigating an incident in which a security guard was found murdered outside a supermarket in Tala market on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Machakos police boss Issa Mohamed said the guard is suspected to have been killed by thugs who raided the supermarket on Sunday night getting away with bundles of cash and some valuables.

The robbers are said to have dug a hole which they used to access the building and ransacked the cash deposit box before stealing an unknown amount of money.

“They also stole several other valuables and attacked a guard on duty,” Mohamed said.

According to the police boss, the gang destroyed CCTV cameras mounted on the building to avoid being detected.

He noted that some of the criminals are suspected to be former workers at the supermarket.

“We suspect the gang are part of former workers at the supermarket but we are pursuing the matter,” Mohamed added.

The body of the deceased was moved to Kangundo Hospital mortuary as police pursue the perpetrators.

Such incidents are not new in the country.

The owner of the joint is reported to have safely locked the shop before walking home that night only to come in the morning and find her guard in a pool of blood.

The robbers stole a TV screen and alcoholic drinks worth Ksh70,000.

“The unknown number of thugs attacked the guard before breaking into the shop by cutting the padlock and stole one TV screen of 32 inches and assorted alcoholic drinks worth Ksh70, 000,” a police report read in part.
