Ruto, Gachagua lead Kenyans in celebrating Faith Kipyegon after bagging award

Kenya is celebrating a historic moment as middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon clinched the Women’s World Athlete of the Year Award.

The ceremony held in Monaco on Monday, December 11, saw President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua leading the nation in celebrating Kipyegon’s exceptional achievements.

In a statement on his X account, Ruto praised Faith Kipyegon, commending her as a symbol of excellence, versatility, and purpose.

“A fitting crown for the Queen of the track, a worthy tribute to one of the hardest working athletes alive today, the embodiment of excellence, versatility, fortitude, humility, and purpose; an incredible human being, a true champion, and a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Congratulations @Kipyegon_Faith, the World Athlete of the Year,” Ruto stated.

Gachagua echoed the sentiments, noting the exceptional year Kipyegon has had, marked by multiple world records.

“It has been a year of massive World Records for our sterling star, Faith Kipyegon, who showed what grit, hard work, persistence, and determination can deliver,” Gachagua remarked.

“To crown the year by being named the World Athlete of the Year- Women’s Track Events confirms what a true jewel Faith is to our country. As the first Kenyan female athlete to win this accolade, tonight we heartily celebrate her inspirational achievement,” he added.

Other athletes were also recognized for their remarkable achievements.

Kelvin Kiptum was named the World Athlete of the Year for Men’s Out of Stadia events and earned accolades for setting a new World Marathon Record.

Gachagua extended his congratulations to rising stars Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Faith Cherotich, who were named Male and Female Rising Stars, respectively.

“Hearty congratulations also to Kelvin Kiptum for being named the World Athlete of the Year for Men’s Out of Stadia events for setting a new World Marathon Record. My plaudits also go to our rising stars Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Faith Cherotich, named Male and Female Rising Stars, respectively. We celebrate your achievements this year and look forward to seeing you better the records in 2024,” Gachagua stated.

Women’s field: Yulimar Rojas, VEN, triple jump
Women’s out of stadia: Tigist Assefa, ETH, marathon
Men’s track: Noah Lyles, USA, 100m/200m
Men’s field: Mondo Duplantis, SWE, pole vault
Men’s out of stadia: Kelvin Kiptum, KEN, marathon
