Gachagua offsets Ksh1M hospital bill for Dedan Kimathi’s widow

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to support the widow of Mau Mau freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi following an appeal to help offset Ksh1 million medical bills accrued during her treatment at the Nairobi hospital.

Mukami Kimathi, aged 101, made the appeal to President William Ruto and DP Gachagua on Saturday, January 14, 2023.

The former freedom fighter was admitted to the hospital on January 5, 2023, with pneumonia symptoms. She was treated and later discharged on January 12, 2023.

However, the hospital detained her since she was unable to offset the pending bills.

Gachagua has announced that he has made arrangements to help Mukami out of the situation. He empathised with the senior citizen noting that no freedom fighter should have to endure such.

He noted that he learnt of Mukami’s ordeal while on a tour to the Luo Nyanza region in the company of his boss.

“I am saddened that Mukami, the wife of our hero, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri, has been ill and admitted at a Hospital in Nairobi,” the DP wrote on his Twitter

“This matter was brought to my attention yesterday while on a working tour in Nyanza with President
William Ruto. In this regard, I have tasked Embakasi Central MP Hon. Benjamin Gathiru a.k.a Major Donk to look into her situation urgently,” he added.

He further promised to pay Mukami a visit and ensure that her needs are catered for.

“On my return to Nairobi later today, I will make time to visit our mother to check on her progress and assess possible interventions to make her life more comfortable. I wish her a quick recovery and God’s blessings,” the DP added.
