A forest ranger attached to Nzoia Forest station in Lugari Kakamega County is expected to be arraigned in court after he lost his firearm and failed to report.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, the officer identified as Liston Leakey explained to the police that the gun was loaded with 29 rounds of 7.62mm of ammunition when it was snatched from him.

Leakey stated that on Friday night, September 23, 2022, he heard people cutting trees in the forest and he armed himself and rode his motorbike towards the direction where the sound came from without alerting his colleagues.

Upon arrival, he says he was attacked by three men who were armed with pangas and robbed him of the firearm.

Leakey did not report the matter and was on Sunday arrested and placed in custody.

“Leakey lost his firearm serial number o224 make SHE gun loaded with 29 rounds of 7.62mm. He was interrogated and alleged that on 23/9/2022 at around 2100hrs while at the station he heard some sounds of cutting trees within the forest. He went to the scene with his motorcycle armed with the riffle and that a gang of three who had been armed with pangas took it away,” the police report stated.

Police are yet to establish why the ranger did not report that he lost his firearm. Detectives continue with the hunt for the three men who allegedly attacked Leakey and stole his rifle.
