Two female students at St. Paul’s Kitum secondary school in Endebess constituency, Trans Nzoia County sustained injuries after a fire incident that destroyed a 149-bed capacity dormitory on the night of Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
Confirming the incident, Endebess Sub-County Police Commander Salesio Njiru said the two students who sustained minor injuries were attended to at the school’s sick bay and are recuperating well.
“The dorm hosted 149 students. Two students sustained minor injuries. One got a cut on the left leg and the other one got burnt and they were treated. They are all in stable condition” Njiru said.
The police boss also noted that investigations were currently ongoing to establish the cause of the matter.
“This is the second time the dormitory is burning under unclear circumstances. We will get to the root of this matter. I think the school has a problem or the school administration has a problem, maybe by evening we shall have known what is wrong” he stated.
“Last time, they said the dorm was burnt by KCSE candidates but this time we will have to investigate the teachers because how come two dormitories are burnt in a span of one year?” Njiru posed.
While assuring parents of their children’s safety, Njiru reiterated that legal action will be taken against those found guilty.
“Our parents should not panic because all their children are safe. We want to assure them that it will not be business as usual, necessary legal action will be taken against all the culprits” he added.
Area leaders led by former Endebess Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Patrick Kisiero condemned the incident.
“We need answers on this incident. We are really tired of these retrogressive acts, we condemn the act in the strongest terms possible” Kisiero said.
On 26 November 2021, another dormitory that housed 259 students was torched by unknown people.
