Comedian Eric Omondi has offered to help a man who paraded several academic certificates online, Alsom Manyama, secure a job.
In a post on social media on Sunday, April 7, 2024, Omondi said he had over 400 job openings that he was currently distributing to jobless youths.
“I am looking for this man, Alson Manyama. We have secured almost 400 jobs and we will begin distributing them soon I want him to be among the first beneficiaries. If you know him please DM his number or tag his page in the comments,” Omondi stated.
The man, who indicates on his Facebook profile that he lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, announced that he was aiming to earn himself a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in 2025.
“2025 Target = PhD. To be Dr Alson Manyama. You can buy papers…not degrees,” he captioned photos with his academic qualifications.
According to another post on his profile, he recently graduated with a Masters Degree in Management – Digital Business from Wits University in South Africa.
“Superstar @AlsonManyama. My respect is not Requested, It is Earned. Humble and intelligent. #Master (Degree) of Management – Digital Business @Wits,” he captioned his graduation photos.
Eric Omondi’s offer
The offer from Eric Omondi comes days after he congregated thousands of youths trying to connect them with employers.
In a post, Omondi said he had met over 3,500 graduate job seekers in Nairobi, promising to help jobseekers in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret and other parts of the country.
“Today I met around 3500 unemployed graduates from Nairobi. We are going to provide employment for each and everyone of them. We will then move to Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret and the rest of the country,” he stated.
Unemployment rate
As of 2022, Kenya’s unemployment rate was estimated 5.5 per cent.
Unemployment rate is the share of people who want to work but cannot find jobs, which includes workers who have lost jobs and are searching for new ones, workers whose jobs ended due to an economic downturn, and workers for whom there are no jobs because the labour supply in their industry is larger than the number of jobs available.
According to the Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE), youth (15 – 34-year-olds), who form 35 per cent of the Kenyan population, have the highest unemployment rate of 67 per cent.
“Although the overall unemployment in Kenya is at 12.7 per cent, Youth (15 – 34-year-olds), who form 35 per cent of the Kenyan population, have the highest unemployment rate of 67 per cent. Over one million young people enter into the labour market annually without any skills some having either dropped out of school or completed school and not enrolled in any college,” FKE says.
It is estimated that Africa has a population of almost 200 million people aged between 15 and 24. This category makes up 40 per cent of the workforce and 60 per cent of the unemployed active labour force.
