The government has hit a new milestone in revenue collected through the eCitizen portal, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration says.
In a statement to newsrooms on Thursday, December 21, Julius Bitok, the Principal Secretary State Department for Citizen Services said Ksh903.6 million was collected through the platform on Wednesday, the highest amount collected in a single day.
Of the amount, Bitok said, nearly a third was generated from transactions in US dollars totalling Ksh51,446,495 compared to the Ksh680.4 million in the local currency.
The state department noted that the figure marks a steady rise in monies collected through the platform following President William Ruto’s directive to all state agencies to onboard all their services on the eCitizen platform by the end of this year.
President Ruto had in June also directed state agencies to shut down multiple paybill numbers to allow Kenyans pay for services using a single channel, 222222.
“This was intended to inject better management and transparency in revenue collection and to stem leakages from numerous collection points,” the department said.
Bitok also reported that the directive had seen over 14,000 services onboarded on the eCitizen portal with daily revenue collection rising to an average of Ksh300 million last month.
“Data from Treasury reveals in November, Ksh4.664B was collected up from Ksh1.44B in June before the Presidential directive. The amounts for July, August and September Were Ksh2.362B, Ksh3.63613 and Ksh4,233B respectively,” he added.
The statement added: “The government is banking on the average 5,000 new users who sign up to eCitizen daily in addition to the 11 million eCitizen existing users alongside the onboarding of more services to further increase its daily revenue collection.”
