The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) is set to launch launch an audit into the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) systems.

The audit, scheduled to start on Thursday, August 31, 2023, will target NHIF systems, policies and operations to identify and expose systemic loopholes and weaknesses conducive to corruption and unethical practices.

“The findings of the audit exercise will guide various reform actions, including addressing current accountability deficits in the management of public resources under the care and control of NHIF,” EACC said.

“The audit exercise, to be launched at the NHIF boardroom, is a corruption prevention measure that does not in any way prejudice the ongoing investigations at the state agency. EACC is mandated to undertake such system reviews in public bodies either on its own motion or at the invitation of the concerned entity.”

NHIF is currently facing a probe by the Senate Health Committee following an alleged loss of billions through dubious claims.

This follows an outcry from the public that some health facilities are colluding with NHIF officials to siphon funds by inflating the bills for the patients using the NHIF insurance covers.
