A police officer is under investigation after he was allegedly caught on camera stealing at a school in Bomet county during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) examinations.

The cop, who was part of a team of officers deployed to man exam centres in the county, is alleged to have stolen money from female invigilators supervising exams at Kimulot High School in Konoin constituency on Monday, December 5.

CCTV cameras

The incident was caught on CCTV cameras installed in the room where the teachers had kept their handbags in line with the examination regulations.

In the footage shared widely on social media, the armed officer in full uniform is seen walking into the room before sitting next to where the teachers had kept their personal effects.

He is seen ransacking the handbags before removing what looks like money. He stashes the items into his pockets and returns the handbags to their previous position before walking out.

The teachers later discovered that their money was missing and filed a complaint with the school management leading to the retrieval of the CCTV footage from the room.

Police say appropriate action will be taken against the officer if found culpable.

“We have dispatched officers from the county headquarters to the ground to verify the information that is now in the public domain. We are trying to verify whether or not the incident occurred in the school so that appropriate action can be taken,” a senior police officer at the Bomet County headquarters was quoted as saying by Nation.

The KCSE examination kicked off across the country on Friday.

A total of 884,263 candidates are writing the tests that will take three weeks to complete.
