Police in Embu county have launched investigations after a 14-year-old boy allegedly took his own life after being sent home to collect fees.

Dickson Mwenda was a candidate for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam at Kiriari Primary School in Kigumo village.

While confirming the incident the area chief Nelson Muturi said the boy arrived home from school and found his mother attending to his other siblings.

He informed his mother why he was home early before going straight to his room.

After finishing preparations, the mother called Mwenda to come out from his room so that she could escort him to school but he was not responding.

Curious, she entered the room only to find the body of her son dangling from the rooftop of the house.

The woman then raised an alarm, attracting the attention of the neighbours.

Reverend Robert Nyaga, who was among the locals who responded to the woman’s distress calls, described the boy as obedient, saying the incident was unfortunate.

“This boy was very obedient we lack words to express how saddened we are,” he said.

The body of the boy was moved to Embu Level 5 Hospital mortuary pending police investigations.
