The Chinese embassy in Kenya has issued a security alert to its citizens, warning them to avoid travelling to certain areas in the country.
In a statement dated October 25, 2023, the embassy called on Chinese citizens to be extra careful when traversing different areas in Kenya noting that the country’s security is uncertain.
“Recently, as global hotspot issues continue to heat up, Kenya’s domestic security situation has become more uncertain,” the statement translated from Chinese reads in parts
The embassy also implored its citizens to be alert whenever they visit counties such as Wajir, Lamu, Garissa, Mandera and other Kenyan border areas.
Additionally, the South Asian country urged its citizens to tighten their security precautions and avoid visiting areas where foreign tourists gather and densely populated areas.
“The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya remind Chinese citizens in Kenya to pay close attention to the local social security situation, strengthen their security precautions, try to avoid going to areas where foreign tourists gather and places with dense crowds, and be cautious about going to Ken border areas such as Mandela, Wajir, Garissa, and Lamu counties,” the statement added.
Further, the embassy asked its citizens in Kenya to contact the police or the embassy in case of any emergency.
“In case of emergency, please call the police and contact the Chinese Embassy in Kenya or the Global Consular Protection and Services Emergency Call Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the statement added.
The latest comes a week after the United States (US) embassy in Kenya issued a similar security notice to its citizens in Nairobi warning them of an imminent terror attack.
In their advisory, the embassy urged its citizens to exercise caution whenever visiting areas frequented by tourists and foreigners.
“Locations frequented by U.S. citizens and other foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya continue to be attractive targets to terrorists planning to conduct potentially imminent attacks,” the embassy stated.
Despite being unclear what triggered the alert, the embassy further implored American nationals to stay vigilant by reviewing their personal security plans and avoiding crowds.
“Terrorist groups could attack with little to no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners and tourists,” the embassy added.
