Two people have died in a grisly road accident along the Sotik-Kisii Highway in Bomet County.
Sotik Sub-County Police Commandant Andrew Mbogo confirmed that accident saying seven other people among them two children are fighting for their lives in the hospital after sustaining serious injuries during the Wednesday afternoon February 21, 2024, incident.
The police boss said the accident occurred when a matatu collided head-on with a lorry.
“A 14-seater Matatu was trying to overtake a motorbike at a sharp corner when it collided head-on with a lorry,” Andrew Mbogo said.
The police commandant said among those who died was the driver of the matatu.
Mbogo said the two died on the spot adding that those injured were rushed for treatment to Kaplong Mission Hospital in Sotik.
He added that none of the injured was in danger, noting that they were all in stable condition and responding to treatment.
Mbogo said the accident happened at a sharp corner near Brookside Company depot along the highway and regretted that the matatu driver did not exercise caution causing the crash.
The police boss said the driver of the lorry escaped without injuries despite the huge damages.
“The lorry driver escaped without injuries despite the impact of the accident,” he added.
Mbogo said the wreckages of the two vehicles were towed to Sotik police station.
He further cautioned drivers plying the route to exercise caution to avoid accidents.
“It’s a rainy season and I hope our drivers plying the route will exercise caution so that we avoid loss of life,” he added.
Mbogo said an investigation into the incident has been launched.
