One person has been reported missing after a boat capsized in River Migori in Matanda, Migori County.

On Monday, December 4, 2023, the Kenya Red Cross announced that five people had been rescued while rescue efforts were ongoing for the missing person.

“Early this morning, a boat capsized at River Migori in Matanda. Thanks to the quick response and support from the community, five individuals were successfully rescued,” the Kenya Red Cross stated.

“Unfortunately, one person remains missing. The Kenya Red Cross and the County Government have mobilized additional divers for continued search and retrieval efforts.”

On Monday, Voi River burst its banks, causing flooding in villages within Voi Town.

“The Kenya Red Cross is on-site, conducting search and rescue operations for families marooned by the rising waters,” the agency announced.

This comes hours after MPs Ali Wario Shaka of Garsen and his Galole counterpart Hiribae Saidi were rescued after going missing on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

The MPs were rescued alongside nominated MCA Mama Aodho Omara and other passengers on the boat that went missing on Saturday.

As of Friday, December 1, 2023, the total number of deaths emanating from floods due to the current El Nino rains being experienced in the country had reached a total of 142 people.

In a statement on Friday, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced that the rainfall is expected to continue over the Southern parts of the country, with a reduction in intensity and coverage over the Northern parts of the country.

He also announced the establishment of five additional camps to accommodate the growing number of displaced individuals.

“Daadab refugee camp has borne a heavy toll, with approximately 6,000 people displaced as Dahagute, Ito, and Hagadera areas have been submerged. Similarly, in Kakuma refugee camp, 352 people have been displaced, and their houses washed away,” he said.

Members of the public have been warned against crossing flooded rivers.
