Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition has kicked off its anti-government protests in Kisumu city, with Kisumu governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his deputy Mathews Owili leading. Also in the procession is Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron.

Most shops and business entities in the Kisumu central business district remained closed, even as hundreds flocked to the streets to protest.

Speaking to protestors, Professor Nyong’o vowed to stay put but called for peaceful protests.

“Kisumu is on, Ramogi is on and we are marching forward together,” Prof Nyong’o said.

The protests have spread to different parts of the city including the Kisumu Bus park, areas around Kisumu Boys High School and the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

The protestors also flocked the Kondele area towards Nyamasaria on the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.

Previous protests in Kisumu

In the protests held on March 20, 2023, protesters stormed and vandalised United Democratic Alliance (UDA) offices in Kisumu before getting away with several items.

Eric Osenya, UDA’s chairman in Kisumu, said the protesters held them hostage.

“When we got out, they came in and vandalised everything. They took all the computers, laptops, cameras, seats and curtains,” Osenya stated.
