A rider and a pillion passenger, who had been rushed to Shalom Community Hospital Athi River following an accident with a vehicle at EPZ area on Monday morning, have succumbed to the injuries.

The 28-year-old rider and the female pillion passenger aged 34 sustained serious head injuries.

The rider is said to have been overtaking the vehicle from behind and rammed it as it was taking a turn to join a feeder road.

Confirming the incident, Athi River police commander Jos Mudavadi urged road users to be more careful to avert evitable accidents.

“It is sad that the duo who were involved in an accident have succumbed to the injuries. I want to relay my heartfelt condolences to family and friends. It is indeed painful,” the police boss said.

Mudavadi said road safety is a collective initiative which all road users should strive to observe.

“Most accidents are evitable if all road users strive to take precautions and prioritize safety for all. Drivers should make it a priority to save other road users regardless of who is on the wrong. Careless drivers are a threat to other road users and a threat to life. I want to remind drivers, cyclists and boda boda riders that observing set traffic rules is compulsory,” Mudavadi insisted.

The police commander also warned motorists and boda boda riders against speeding.

“Speed kills. Manageable driving speed can save a life when an accident occurs,” Mudavadi added.

The vehicle was damaged on the right door and the motorcycle was extensively damaged.

The bodies of the duo have since been preserved at the Shalom Community Morgue and the vehicle and wreckage towed to Athi River police station.
