Eight people were on Monday, September 26, killed in a grisly road accident at Got Kokech corner along Homa Bay-Kendu Bay road.
Police said the accident occurred when a Kisumu-bound Nissan matatu collided head-on with a fuel tanker headed to Homa Bay.
Among the casualties are the two drivers of the ill-fated vehicles and a Class Seven boy from Janeiro Junior Academy within Homa Bay, who was travelling back to school.
Homa Bay sub-county Police Komander Sammy Koskei confirmed the incident saying the casualties died on the spot.
“We have confirmed that eight passengers including the drivers of the Nissan matatu which was headed the Kisumu route and that of the petrol tanker died on the spot,” Koskei said.
“The two vehicles collided head-on at Got Kokech corner just a few kilometres from Homa Bay town leading to the loss of lives,” he added.
Police suspect that the accident was caused by the speeding matatu.
Koskei urged drivers to observe traffic rules and avoid speeding especially this time the children are getting back to school.
“We all know drivers are currently scrambling for passengers since children are going back to School, I want to warn them against speeding and they must ensure they observe traffic rules and regulations,” he said.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue pending identification.
Those who sustained injuries were rushed to the same facility for treatment.
The accident barely comes a day after a trailer ferrying sugarcanes to Kisumu killed a motorcyclist and a passenger at Arujo bridge within Homa Bay Town.
