70-year-old Safina Namukwaya has taken her twins home nearly two months after she gave birth to her double bundle of joy.
The septuagenarian welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, in late November at Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Uganda.
Namukwaya was recently released to go home with her twins.
“At 70, Safina Namukwaya’s maternal love blossoms into a miracle, cradling twins alongside Dr. Edward Tamale-Sali.
“Their hands hold not just babies, but gems of hope, proving that a mother’s love transcends time and age. In this emblematic moment at Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre, the joy of motherhood shines unblemished, echoing the resilient spirit of Africa where every dream is nurtured with love and care,” Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center Kampala shared on Facebook.
The 70-year-old named her daughter Shakira Babiyre Nabagala and her son Kato Shafique Kangave.
The twins have given Namukwaya and her husband a new status in their rural village.
The elderly mother has now been christened Nalongo – a mother of twins. Her husband is now referred to as Salongo – a father of twins.
IVF
The 70-year-old Ugandan woman welcomed her twins on November 29, 2023, after a successful IVF treatment – becoming among the oldest women to give birth in Africa.
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of several techniques available to help people with fertility problems have a baby. During IVF, an egg is removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg, called an embryo, is then returned to the woman’s womb to grow and develop. [sic]
Safina Namukwaya delivered her twins via a Caesarean Section.
“This story isn’t just about medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit,” the hospital said.
In her interview with a Ugandan media outlet, Namukwaya revealed that this was her second delivery in three years after she gave birth to a baby girl named Sarah in 2020.
She said she had suffered some complications and difficulties during her pregnancy, including the father of her children leaving her.
