A family in Nyatike, Kisii county is mourning the death of their 60-year-old kin who allegedly took his own life on the evening of Wednesday, December 28, 2022.

Area assistant chief Vincent Otieno, while confirming the incident, said the body of the senior citizen identified as Othina was found hanging from a tree a few metres from his home.

He noted that the deceased left one of his wives a suicide note with details of where to find his body.

While speaking to a local publication, the deceased’s family stated that Othina repeatedly complained of his health condition before the incident.

His body was moved to a nearby morgue pending further investigation by the police.

Similar incident

The latest came barely hours after an 11-year-old boy in Kibingoti village, Kirinyaga county allegedly took away his life after his grandparents delayed buying him new Christmas clothes.

Moses Koskei the area police boss who confirmed the incident stated that the deceased’s mother who works in Qatar had sent some money to his grandparents for his new clothes, however, they (grandparents) asked him to be patient and wait to have the clothes after Christmas because of the current price of clothes.

The deceased’s grandmother, Rose Ritho recounted that the boy dug a deep hole within the compound prior to the incident. When she asked him he told her that he was preparing to plant a banana stem.

Consequently, his grandmother cautioned him and asked him to cover it since it would be dangerous to have a banana plantation near an electricity cable.

“I had just got from the farm and saw him digging a deep hole beside our house. I sought why he was doing so. He told me he wanted to plant a banana stem but I cautioned him to stop and cover it because it would be dangerous to have a banana near an electricity cable. At first, he seemed reluctant but later covered the hole with soil,” she stated.

She added: “At the scene where he was digging, I later recovered some sticks that are normally improvised while measuring the length size of a human grave. This totally shocked me,”

The body of the deceased was taken to a nearby hospital morgue pending police investigations.
