Three children have died in a fire incident that guttered their mabati house in the Kirarapon area in Ngong, Kajiado County.

The siblings including a girl and two boys aged 7 months, 2 years and 7 years respectively were burnt beyond recognition with a 4-year-old girl escaping by a whiskey after being rescued by well-wishers who turned out to put off the fire.

In the 11 pm Wednesday incident, both parents were not home and it was not immediately established what caused the fire and where the parents were.

Area assistant chief Daniel Mutangiri while confirming the incident says concerned stakeholders have commenced investigations into the cause of the fire amid calls on parents to detest leaving children unattended.

“It is unfortunate and indeed very sad that we have lost three young souls to fire. As we mourn and console the family, we continue rallying for parental responsibility. It is very disheartening,” Mutangiri said.

He says government agencies will come in handy to offer physiological support to the affected family through intense counselling.

“For now, the best thing we can offer to parents of the children is to help them come to terms with this painful reality. Losing children in such a manner is devastating,” Mutangiri added.

According to neighbours who turned up after seeing smoke billowing from the house, the house was locked from the outside.

When the door was opened, amid raging fire and smoke, the four-year-old girl was rescued by a neighbour.

The girl who ordinarily comes to spend time with the friends’ siblings was in the living room alone waiting for her mother while the three siblings were in the bedroom sleeping.

“We do know what caused the fire but we suspect it could be an electrical fault. In the recent past we have been having a challenge of power going on and off,” a neighbour identified as Joyce Njeri noted.

By the time the county fire engine arrived the kids were already dead.

The rescued girl is receiving treatment at the Ngong sub-county hospital.

The bodies’ remains were taken to the Ngong sub-county hospital Mortuary.

Recurrent fire incidents

The incident comes barely three days after three fire incidents were reported at Kiserian and Ilbisil towns.

At Kiserian a family home was reduced to ashes in what is suspected to be an electric fault.

Tens of traders’ properties were reduced to ashes in Ilbisil town and a dormitory with 120 students capacity at Ilbisil also burnt down.

Kajiado deputy governor Martin Moshisho who chairs the county emergency committee now urge KPLC to respond to reports of power fluctuations.

Moshisho further says the county will come to the aid of affected families saying the county fire engine department will be strengthed to ensure prompt response and rescue during fire incidences.
