World Cup: USA seal knockout spot as Brazil and Morocco claim crucial victories
By Joel Masibo, June 20, 2026The United States booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds after defeating Australia on Matchday 9, Friday, June 19, 2026, while Brazil and Morocco strengthened their chances of progressing with wins over Haiti and Scotland respectively on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The day produced several standout performances, including a brace from Matheus Cunha for Brazil and a stunning strike by Morocco’s Ismael Saibari. The Americans also celebrated qualification thanks to a convincing display against Australia.
USA 2-0 Australia
Group D – Seattle Stadium
The absence of a marquee star did little to slow down Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who secured a second consecutive victory to guarantee passage into the Round of 32.
The breakthrough came when Folarin Balogun’s pressure forced defender Cameron Burgess to turn the ball into his own net. The hosts then doubled their advantage through full-back Alex Freeman. After Sergino Dest’s effort deflected high into the air, Freeman reacted quickest to head home and put the match beyond Australia’s reach.
The result leaves Australia needing a positive outcome against Paraguay to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Scotland 0-1 Morocco
Group C – Boston Stadium
Morocco earned a narrow but deserved win courtesy of a spectacular effort from Ismael Saibari. From a difficult angle and with the ball bouncing awkwardly, the midfielder produced a remarkable strike that combined precision, power and movement to find the back of the net.
The Atlas Lions continued to push for another goal, but Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest.

Scotland improved significantly late in the match and enjoyed periods of possession in the final stages, yet they struggled to seriously test Moroccan shot-stopper Yassine Bounou as Morocco held firm for all three points.
Brazil 3-0 Haiti
Group C – Philadelphia Stadium
Brazil delivered a far more convincing performance than in their opening match, overwhelming Haiti during a dominant first-half display.
Under Carlo Ancelotti, the South Americans looked sharp from the outset. Vinicius Junior contributed both a goal and an assist, while Matheus Cunha marked his first start of the tournament with two goals.
The only concern for Brazil was an injury suffered by Raphinha. Haiti, meanwhile, could take encouragement from a spirited second-half performance in which they caused several problems for their illustrious opponents despite the scoreline.

Group C Standings
Brazil – 4 points (+3 goal difference)

Haiti – 0 points (-4)
Group D Standings
