World Cup: FIFA rejects France’s request to overturn Olise’s yellow card ahead of Morocco clash

France manager Didier Deschamps has confirmed that FIFA has dismissed the French Football Federation’s appeal to cancel Michael Olise’s yellow card picked up during France’s FIFA World Cup round-of-16 clash against Paraguay.
Olise was shown a yellow card in the closing stages of last Saturday’s encounter after becoming involved in an altercation during the heated fixture. The French Football Federation later submitted an appeal, hoping the caution would be rescinded.
Addressing reporters ahead of France’s quarterfinal meeting with Morocco on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Deschamps confirmed the decision had not been reversed.

“Nothing has changed regarding Olise’s yellow card. We received FIFA’s notice this morning confirming the original decision stands,” Deschamps said on Tuesday.
As a result, should France defeat Morocco on Thursday and Olise collect another booking, the Bayern Munich midfielder will miss the semifinal through suspension.
Olise has been one of France’s standout performers at the tournament, providing a competition-high five assists so far. At the tournament, no newcomer has influenced the creativity rankings more than France playmaker Michael Olise. Sitting at the top of the overall standings, Olise has consistently opened up opposition defences through his passing, close control and vision.
Match outlook
France are pursuing another remarkable milestone as they attempt to become only the second European nation to reach three successive World Cup finals. Standing in their way is a Moroccan team that made history in Qatar by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals and which is hoping to repeat that achievement in North America.
As the only African side standing, Morocco will have the perfect opportunity to erase painful memories from four years ago when they face France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.
The Atlas Lions were knocked out by Les Bleus in the semi-finals of the 2022 tournament in Qatar, and now they are determined to return the favour while chasing another historic place in the last four.
Meanwhile, France have looked among the tournament’s strongest teams throughout the competition. Appearing at their eighth straight World Cup, Didier Deschamps’ side swept through Group I with victories over Senegal (3-1), Iraq (3-0) and Norway (4-1). Their attacking unit, led by Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, has consistently troubled opponents, while Bradley Barcola has also added another dangerous option in attack.
