World Cup: Deschamps defends France skipper Mbappe over viral ‘dictator’ meme
By Luke Oluoch, July 5, 2026France captain Kylian Mbappe’s sensational goalscoring streak at the World Cup is making just as many headlines as his reaction to the internet trolls. Fans have flooded social media with endless memes humourously depicting the forward as a footballing ‘dictator’.
The internet has been awash with viral images jokingly portraying the Real Madrid superstar as an authoritarian figure, a nod to his seemingly unstoppable dominance on the pitch and his absolute authority in big games.
Some fans have even gone as far as to nickname him ‘Mobutu’ in reference to the late Zairean dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, and the star appears to be leaning into the allegations.

Several viral moments on the pitch have added fuel to the fire. During France’s final group stage clash against Norway, the skipper was caught on camera firmly directing referee Anthony Taylor to hand the captain’s armband to Aurelien Tchouameni after being substituted.
In another instance, he was spotted giving direct instructions to the stadium grounds staff on exactly where to mop up excess water from the pitch, an act of leadership that fans immediately misconstrued to reinforce the “dictator” narrative.
Last laugh against Paraguay
The banter reached a fever pitch during France’s high-stakes Round of 16 clash against Paraguay, where a bold traveling fan brought a custom Dictator Mbappe shirt into the stadium.
However, that stunt did not age well. Mbappe went on to deliver the decisive blow, coolly converting a penalty that knocked the South American side out of the World Cup.
Deschamps’ defense
France head coach Didier Deschamps quickly jumped to his captain’s defense after the match, reiterating that the public image painted of the forward is nowhere near who the Real Madrid star truly is behind closed doors.
“You guys make Kylian Mbappe seem like a dictator… the reality is the exact opposite,” Deschamps stated. “His public image does not reflect reality at all. Kylian has always been mature, and the whole team follows him. I am so happy to have him as captain. Whenever he speaks on and off the pitch, he represents the entire group,” he said.
